Please tell us about Tahmina Arts and how it all began.
Since I was about 17 I dreamt of starting a fashion brand however, for a long time it just remained a distant dream as I didn’t have the confidence nor did I have the tools to get started. After I graduated I started working full time in the sales industry and thought about building a corporate career. I got knocked back several times from progression and started to feel demotivated and simply wasn’t happy with where I was both in my personal and professional life but I just carried on.
In Jan 2017 my youngest sister Abida passed away at the age of 18 from a sudden death, which to this day has not been given an identified cause. The experience left my entire family numb and put me in a very dark place for some time. I was out of work for several months and when I returned nothing was the same, I struggled to focus and motivate myself to work. Until April 2017 where something indescribable happened to me, I experienced a sudden urge to change the world, a sudden change of mentality and I realised that my life was meant for more. I decided that I was no longer going to let the loss of my baby sister be a negative dark, space in my life. My sister was an amazing person and she deserved to be remembered in the best and most beautiful of ways. It was then that I had realised it was time to stop wasting time and work on achieving my dreams.
Within weeks I had Launched Tahmina Arts fuelled with a whole load of adrenaline. I was awarded Female Entrepreneur of the Year by Millennial’s Club shortly after the re-launch and featured in several Entrepreneurial and fashion magazines.
What has been your greatest achievement to date?
Starting TA! It was more of a self-battle at the start until I found the confidence in me to just do it. Once I believed in myself, people around me started believing in me too.
As an entrepreneur have there been times when you’ve found it difficult to managing your wellbeing and how have you overcome this?
Being an entrepreneur often means working around the clock, working at home or working when your friends are not. I’ve often struggled with my sleeping patterns and balancing my work, home and social life.
I used to think the most effective way to maximise productivity was to get up as early as possible and go to sleep as late as possible and work as much as I physically could during the hours I was awake. However I am not a great morning person and I struggled to wake up at 7am every morning and this resulted in me being mostly tired, cranky and not performing at my best throughout the day.
So I decided I would give myself a 10am start every morning, this ensured me a good night sleep and time to have breakfast. Immediately I saw an increase in my productivity and I generally felt happier. Although I was working for less hours I was getting more done. Which then helped me plan and organise my days better.
Do you have any wellbeing rituals that help you perform at your best each day?
I go to bed every night making sure I don’t have any hard feelings towards anyone or anything. I go to sleep with a clear conscience and this allows me to start each day as a fresh new day.
I eat breakfast every morning, I don’t feel myself until I’ve had my breakfast.
I always make an effort with my outfits and how I present myself. The whole “look good feel good” thing is real for me and my morning motto is “dress the way you want to be addressed.”
How do you switch off?
As a creative when I have ideas racing through my mind switching off becomes mission impossible. However having tried many remedies, Mindfulness Meditation so far has been the only thing that’s helped me switch off.
What motivates you?
My family, the goal to be a better person that I was yesterday. I am motivated by seeing positive change in the world, being successful.
